What’s So Good About Good Friday?

Do I blog on this every year?  I’m not sure.  I’m too old to remember those details and too lazy to look it up.  Every year when it is Good Friday, I am totally amazed that anyone would think that the day Jesus was killed on the cross was good!  I think this should be Bad Friday and Easter should be called Good Sunday…when He rose again!  Doesn’t that make more sense?

I don’t know about you, but it seems that Good Friday is always a reflective day for me.  Yes, I had breakfast with a friend, did some laundry and mowed the grass, but I’ve had Jesus on my mind all day despite my daily activities.   I am still amazed to think that He, being God, would actually suffer on a cross for my sins and yours.  When I think about His sacrifice, I bow in awe.  What a wondrous thing to know and love a Savior that loved me so much that He died a brutal death for me.  Wow.

Lately, I have been appalled with all the trash I see up and down the sides of the highways.  I don’t understand why someone can’t hold their garbage in their car until they get home to put it in a can.  Granted, there are those mishaps where someone might be hauling a load in their pickup truck and have stuff blow out.  But, really?  Could that many fly-aways account for the amount of trash accumulating on the side of the roads?

This scenario reminds me of our relationship with Jesus.  We make choices in our lives that aren’t always right in God’s eyes and according to His teachings in the Bible.  The fact is, we all leave a trail of trash here and there that isn’t so pretty and probably doesn’t smell real good either.

Today as I think about the sacrifice that Jesus made for my sins, I am even more convicted to never sin again.  He gave His life so that I could be free of garbage in my life and be holy in Him!  Why do I keep throwing my trash out the window for Him to have to come behind and clean up?

Today, I am humbled.  Lord, please forgive me for those things that I have done that stink up my environment.  I pray that you will protect the innocent people that I have negatively affected with my littering.  You have given your life for me and I don’t want to ever take that for granted.  I trust that your death–the price you paid for my sins even when I didn’t deserve it– will continue to recycle my life into something you can use for Your good.  Praise and thanks to the One Who gave His life for me and for you!

Now I know why it is called Good Friday.  It is a good and beautiful gift we were given on this day.

1John 1:9  (NKJV)  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I always thought the same as you about Good Friday. I like how you came to the conclusion that it is good because of what all Jesus did for us on that day. He certainly cleaned up the sin and garbage in our life. IJohn 1:9 says it all!
